Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany. His father gave him his first music lessons. As a young boy, he earned money for his family by playing the piano in taverns, even though they weren't the kinds of places a child was permitted to visit. By age 20 he was already making a reputation as a famous pianist and composer. Brahms never married, but had many famous musical friends, especially Robert and Clara Schumann. During his life, he wrote four symphonies and many compositions for orchestra, voice, piano and other instruments. He loved the music of Bach, Handel and Beethoven, and was inspired by their styles. Brahms' music is a combination of classical form and romantic melodies. A few of Brahms' well-known compositions are found below. Click on the links to hear them.
